Cursorless is the most sophisticated voice code editing available, and it requires Talon to run. It parses your file into an abstract syntax tree and paints small coloured markers — "hats" — above tokens on screen. Instead of moving the cursor down three lines, left two words, selecting, and deleting, you name the hat and the operation, and it happens in one command. It's a genuinely different model of editing, and it's why experienced voice coders can match or beat typists.
Whole edits in one utterance. Naming a target and an action beats sequential cursor movement by a wide margin. Once fluent, it is faster than typing for structural edits.
Syntax-aware, not text-aware. Because it understands the AST, you can operate on functions, arguments, and blocks as units rather than as character ranges.
Hats make everything addressable. Anything visible on screen is one command away, with no navigation step at all.
Free and open source, with an active community.
State of the art, genuinely. Voice-coding practitioners broadly agree this is the best editing approach available. It isn't marketing.
Where it falls short
You must learn Talon first. Cursorless is not a starting point. The community advice is explicit: learn the Talon alphabet, get comfortable with basic voice navigation and text editing, and only then attempt Cursorless. That's weeks before you begin, and weeks more after.
VS Code only. No JetBrains, no Vim, no Emacs. If your editor is elsewhere, this isn't available to you.
Visually dense. Coloured hats over every token on screen is a lot to look at, and some people find it genuinely hard to read code that way.
Two systems to maintain. Talon plus Cursorless, both community-maintained, both needing configuration.
Not for casual use. The investment only pays back if voice is your primary input. Someone with a mild RSI who types most of the time will never recoup it.

Free and open source. Talon, which it requires, is also free.
Who it's for
Developers who code by voice as their main input method and use VS Code — people with significant RSI or mobility limitations, and a small number of enthusiasts who've decided this is simply the better way to edit. If that's you, it's the best thing available and worth the weeks. If you're exploring voice coding tentatively, start with Talon alone and come back to this once the alphabet is second nature.
