Talon is the substrate of modern voice coding. It's free, runs on all three desktop platforms, and does far more than dictation: voice commands, noise recognition — clicking with a mouth pop rather than a word — eye tracking for cursor positioning, and full Python scripting to customise everything. Most serious voice-coding setups, Cursorless included, are Talon configurations rather than separate products. For people with RSI or limited hand use, it is frequently the difference between working and not.

Complete hands-free control. Not dictation with a few commands bolted on — an entire input layer replacing keyboard and mouse. This is what makes it viable as assistive technology rather than a productivity accessory.
Noise recognition is genuinely clever. Clicking with a pop or a hiss instead of a word is faster and less taxing on the voice than speaking "click" thousands of times a day.
Eye tracking for the cursor. Look where you want the pointer. Combined with noise clicks, that's a full mouse replacement without hands.
Python scripting means no ceiling. Anything you can express in Python becomes a voice command. It's why the community ecosystem is so deep.
Free, and local. No subscription, no cloud, no audio leaving the machine.
Where it falls short
The learning curve is weeks, not hours. Community estimates put fluency at two to four weeks, starting with learning the Talon alphabet before you can do anything useful. This is the single biggest barrier and it's unavoidable.
Linux is X11 only. Wayland users are excluded, which is an increasing problem as distributions move across.
Configuration is the product. Out of the box Talon does relatively little; the value comes from community configs and your own scripts. Expect to assemble a setup rather than install one.
Patreon-gated features. Early access and priority support sit behind a paid tier. Reasonable for a free tool, but worth knowing.
Documentation is community-driven. The Talon wiki is excellent, but it's a community effort rather than polished vendor documentation.

Who it's for
Anyone who needs to use a computer without their hands — RSI, injury, or permanent mobility limitation — and developers who want to code by voice seriously. The time investment is real, and for people in the first group it is unambiguously worth it. If you want voice coding without weeks of learning, nothing currently delivers that; Serenade tried and is no longer actively maintained. Once you're comfortable with Talon, Cursorless is the next step.
