The spread isn't arbitrary - it tracks the pricing model more than the product - so the useful question isn't "what does dictation software cost" but "which model fits how I'll use it."

Three of the most-used dictation tools cost nothing: Apple Dictation, Windows Voice Typing, and Gboard Voice Typing. All are built in, and two of them run offline.

What you're paying for when you don't take the free option: custom vocabulary, per-app formatting, AI cleanup, mobile parity, and someone to email when it breaks.
The clearest decision in the category, and it turns on one question: will you still be dictating in two years?

Against a competitor's subscription the maths changes sharply. superwhisper's $249.99 lifetime beats Wispr Flow's $144 a year partway through year two.
The risk with lifetime licences is vendor lifespan. "Lifetime" means the product's life, not yours. VoiceDash sells through AppSumo with a 60-day money-back guarantee, which is a reasonable hedge but not a guarantee the company exists in three years. Established products with an obvious revenue base - superwhisper, MacWhisper - carry less of that risk than a six-month-old app.
Almost every subscription here discounts annual billing heavily, and the gap is bigger than in most software categories.
Committing annually is often the single largest saving available, so it's worth using the free trial properly before deciding. A 50% discount for annual billing is also a signal about churn - these products lose a lot of monthly subscribers.
If you transcribe occasionally, subscriptions are bad value. Several vendors price by the hour instead.

Meeting assistants all cost $10–30 a seat, and differ in what they cap.

Prices jump an order of magnitude, and most vendors don't publish them.

Reseller: Dragon Medical One at roughly $99 a user per month on a one-year term, $89 on two years, $79 on three, plus about $525 one-time implementation per user. Dragon Copilot from around $160 a user per month.
Enterprise, quote only: Suki from a reported $299–399. DeepScribe at a reported $350–500+, with $500–1,000 setup and mandatory annual contracts. Abridge at a reported $150–300 per clinician per month, with system-scale contracts of $50,000–500,000+.

Total-not-monthly free tiers. Aqua Voice's free tier is 1,000 words total. Read the unit.
Per-file caps. Notta free gives 120 minutes a month but caps each file at three minutes, which excludes almost every real meeting. Trint Starter gives seven files a month at $52 a seat.
Add-ons that dominate the base price. Philips SpeechLive is $12.90 a user per month - and speech recognition itself is a $25.90 add-on, tripling it.
Two SKUs for one app. MacWhisper is €59 one-time on Gumroad, or $29.99/year and $99.99 lifetime as "Whisper Transcription" on the App Store.
Seat minimums. Read AI's Enterprise tiers need 10+ licences. Voicy Teams needs three users.
Hardware plus subscription. Plaud sells devices at $159–189 and a subscription at $99.99–239.99 a year.
Compliance gated by tier. Wispr Flow's HIPAA-ready BAA is Enterprise only. Willow Voice enforces HIPAA from Business up. Nabla's free tier reportedly has no BAA.
